Reflections on Exchange with American Librarian
On April 7th, RCEF was fortunate to invite 26 teachers, students, and parents from Trinity School in Menlo Park, California to the city of Yongji to visit Guan Ai School and Xiaochao School. The experience that made the deepest impression on me was my discussion with Librarian Becky Zeren. From that conversation I gathered some [...]

Bookmaking Class Reflection
Developing and teaching a bookmaking class at Guan Ai School this past summer was an incredibly rewarding experience for me. I love teaching and took advantage of the summer vacation to develop a ten day activity class at the school. Though I developed the curriculum, most important to the class was my partnership with two [...]
Ms. Wang, Master Storyteller
Ms. Wang is the first grade Chinese teacher. She likes to tell stories to students. Here is a blog post she wrote: Young faces, rising voices, enthusiastic hand movements. All of these show their happy and enriched childhoods, increased interest in reading, and improved speaking and presentation skills. A childhood without reading is a dry [...]
New Construction at Guan Ai Primary
Last year, construction at Guan Ai Primary School began with the building of two new wood buildings donated by Canada Wood, a non-profit organization. Another participant, Huang Yaxiong, used his own money to start a small lending collection for his middle [...]
Library opening in Guozhuang!
I’ve just returned from a visit to Guozhuang village, where a brand new RCEF-sponsored library was just opened. The village had held a “book giving ceremony” as part of the Chinese New Year festivities. Afterwards, the village committee invited booklovers in the village to come together and decide how to encourage reading in the village. [...]
Sparking a love for reading
