Reflections on the Winter Teacher Training

Mrs Li Huaying explaining her rules to 6th grade English learners

We invited some teachers from Dulangkou School to come and give some training to our teachers. We really appreciated them giving up their precious holidays to come, and we benefited greatly from their instruction. Firstly, we witnessed the admirable cultivation of a famous school’s teachers: their bearing was unified, graceful and cultured; it mixed modesty, a talent for study and care for the students, and at every point displayed a teacher’s responsibility and affection.

Their classroom performance was even more rousing: their teaching methods were flexible and diverse, and they inspired the students’ enthusiasm. The Dulangkou teachers told us: “The students don’t have to raise their hands. They should just speak out, debate, and make comments. The classroom should be lively but orderly.” Although our students couldn’t reach that level in just the few days the Dulangkou teachers were here, they were visibly making progress. What’s more, the classroom methods that the teachers showed us are easily implemented, with obvious results. We all did a trial lesson and although there were plenty of mistakes, but we felt that a lot of the problems we face are caused by teachers using inappropriate methods. For example, there are usually three or four students who don’t pay attention in our classes but in the classes of the Dulangkou teachers, there were none.Their successes in the classroom are inseparably linked how hard they study and how deeply they think about their teaching. Just as Teacher Cui said at the start of training: “If you want to succeed, you have to go through hardships beyond what ordinary people can bear. You have to find the strength that ordinary people cannot summon.” Furthermore, Dulangkou’s success is inextricably linked to their school’s strict management system. The teachers explained the system to us and made us realise that our management system is inadequate.

Formulating short-term goals is extremely important. After setting these goals, we must strictly practice the new methods and gradually turn these into good habits. This provides the answer to the difficult questions we have faced about fostering good behaviour and study habits in students. After attending this training, these are the things I think we must do:

  1. Change our way of thinking. Instead of teaching only knowledge, teach students methods for acquiring knowledge and strive to get them interested.
  2. Each week draw up short-term goals, think of workable solutions, and form good habits.
  3. Improve the school’s management. Work hard at preparing lessons and increase our efforts in and out of the classroom.
  4. Make a good evaluation system that can reflect on the work that we do.

  1. It’s always fascinating and a learning experience to witness teachers from different cultures perform their stuff in front of us. It’s even quite amazing that they don’t have any special technique but just pure genuine passion and common sense teaching.
