Pen Pal Project Begins

张渊奇 works on his final draft

Recently, 6th grade students at Guan Ai Primary began drafting their first letters to their pen pals. This is the second year this class will exchange letters with students at Trinity School in Menlo Park, California.

This year the 6th graders will be writing their letters in English instead of having someone translate for them. As the year progresses, the students will be able to write more interesting, individualized letters. For the first letter students are following a format provided by Teacher Yang and myself. The students are expected to answer the following questions in their first pen pal letter.

-What is your name?

-Where do you live?

-How old are you?

-What activities do you like?

-Finally, the students are required to ask their pen pals several questions about themselves and their lives in the United States.

In addition to the English writing, the letters will include photographs of each students and some artwork. Diane Geng will visit Trinity School in November and drop off our first correspondence of the year.

  1. In our letters we are trying to respond to your questions too. We would like to write some words or sentences in Chinese to you, but probably won’t be able to this time. We are going to send you some photos and art too. We are looking forward to getting your letters next week! We are getting ready for Thanksgiving and have one week vacation. Do you have any holidays coming up too?

We look forward to hearing from you,
    Trinity 5th Graders

  2. The students here are excited to receive your letters as well. Photographs and artwork would be great!

We don’t have a school holiday until Spring Festival at the end of January, but then we’ll be out for almost a month. I think everyone is looking forward to it.
