This training was the first chance for Guan Ai teachers to present to others some of the progressive efforts of the school over the past year. Vice Principal and co-founder Sun Huimiao (孙会苗) introduced why she and her husband started Guan Ai School and the values of “loving care for every child” which the school is based on. Vice principal Su (苏校长) who joined the school at the start in 2005 talked about how these values were transmitted to the teachers. Then Principal Qin (秦校长), a long-time educator at public schools who only came to Guan Ai in 2007, shared his impressions of what made Guan AI special compared to other schools. Jiang Peng (江鹏) explained the Teacher Sharing Meetings RCEF started at Guan Ai last semester and 4 teachers introduced different “special classes” they had experimented with, including keyboard class, the student vegetable garden, the student newspaper, and the library and reading program. This was followed by an introduction to the Desheng Common Peoples School by its principal Zhang Xiaolin (张晓琳). I will write more about her school in another post. Principal Zhang commented about the Guan Ai teachers’ presentation, “I can see your happiness in your work expressed on your faces and in your clear presentation. You say what you think and have a great desire to communicate what you’re thinking. I think you have shared with us some very concrete, feasible methods and patterns of thinking.”

That afternoon, Li Guangdui (李光对), an experienced rural teacher and trainer, shared methods he has experimented with in rural Guizhou elementary schools based on Tao Xingzhi’s philosophy. After this, we had small group discussions on topics the teachers had come up with themselves as being either areas they could share expertise in, or that they wanted help with. The topics included:

• How to cultivate students’ interest in learning
• Integrating physical labor into school teaching and learning
• Reading Programs
• Morals and Values Education
• School Management (principals and RCEF only)
