Teacher Training Day 2: Teacher-Researchers & Creativity Education

The second day of the Teacher Professional Development Training was mostly spent listening to guest speaker Zuo Zhaojun (左兆军), an education researcher from the Xuzhou City Education Bureau Research Department in Jiangsu Province (徐州市教育局教研室教研员). He is an extremely articulate and personable man who has mentored many new teachers to become master teachers. He is a sought after speaker at trainings and we were fortunate to host him. Mr. Zuo evolved into a researcher and trainer after years of firsthand experience as an innovative elementary school teacher. Mr. Zuo said he always wanted to be a teacher but didn’t have a philosophy or direction. He read many education books and in the end it was Tao Xingzhi’s philosophy of linking teaching, learning, and doing (教学做合一) that made sense to him. He carried out many experiments with his students and wrote about the process frequently. He encouraged our teachers to do so as well using the following guidelines:

  • Write clearly and in detail to hone your own analysis skills. Don’t make it seem better than it was for your own benefit.
  • Internalize an attitude of total sacrifice for the field of education.
  • Make writing about your teaching like a game so that you feel glad to do it.

He said that all the teachers had the ability to write essays that could share their expertise with others. However, he cautioned them to select small scale, fresh topics and to keep the pieces short. In the afternoon, Mr. Zuo did a few demonstration lessons on “creativity education” (创造教育) an area he has particular expertise in. He usually does these lessons with elementary school students. In one activity, he handed out manila envelopes bulging with unknown objects. He asked each group to guess the contents and give evidence for their guesses. Using our five senses and powers of reason, we got most of the answers right (various fruits and vegetables) and Mr. Zuo made his point of how to sharpen students’ observation and analysis skills. He also gave many examples of creative inventions students had made in response to everyday life problems. Mr. Zuo’s special passion is science education and honing scientific frames of mind in Chinese students. His all-day lectures contained a lot of interesting information and afterwards, Principal Sun Huimiao from Guan Ai and Principal Zhang from Desheng talked with him individually long into the night.

文章力求清晰明了,注重细节,以锻炼写作者的分析能力。实事求是,不可言过其实, 自我美化;

培养献身教育的热情和态度;
