One of the classrooms at Zhaizi Village Elementary School doubled as an art gallery this morning. The occasion was a visit from a venerable local artist—an elderly woman whom the volunteers had invited to display her mastery of the local tradition of paper cutting. Like weaving cloth, paper cutting is a skill practiced by aging women in this area, but it has not been passed on to most in the younger generations. The RCEF volunteers wanted to give students a chance to appreciate her works and become more interested in this special skill from their own communities. The grandmother, as the students called her, brought a couple dozen beautiful and intricate cuts of animals, farmers at work, and pagodas like the ones which dot the local landscape. Volunteers carefully laid the delicate designs out on several desks in the middle of the room and students from four classes had a chance to walk around the display. Afterwards, the grandmother and her host, Mr Zhou from the Handicrafts

workshop, taught a class how to cut a simple design. The classroom was almost silent as the students concentrated on cutting their “Double Happiness” characters. Mr. Zhou encouraged them to make use of their newfound skill during festivals or happy events at home. Instead of having to buy decorations, the students can now make this classic design themselves and give it to their families and friends.
