SVP Midterm Evaluation Meeting
This is one of a series of posts chronicling the RCEF 2008 Summer Volunteer Program in Yongji, Shanxi Province.
The three SVP teams came “home” to Guan Ai School this morning. For the first year in SVP, the teaching
sites are close enough together that staff can visit regularly and teams can gather together even after training is over. Each site is within 15-40 minutes walk from Guan Ai, RCEF’s main program site. Some volunteers joked that coming back to Guan Ai (where we had the training) was like returning to the “mother village!” After five days of teaching, this was the half-way point so we wanted participants to be able to reflect on their experiences and share strategies with each other.
After breakfast, each team gave a summary of what classes they taught and what challenges they had encountered. Then participants who were teaching similar subjects had an hour and a half to discuss in small groups and share experiences from different sites. The subject groups were: Science/Health, Foreign Languages, Social Sciences, and Special Classes. Then RCEF’s Material Designs Director Marco Flagg explained the policy of how to organize and submit pictures to RCEF. You’ll be able to see pictures from the program on RCEF’s Photo Gallery in August!
Each team brainstormed a few main issues they wanted to discuss with others. Sara wrote 12 of these topics on the board and people voted during lunch for the topic they were most interested in. Among the six chosen were: 1) How to control your relationship with students: Friends vs. authority figures; 2) How to hold more effective team meetings; 3) How the community can get involved in education; 4) How to adjust your classes based on students’ reactions; 5) Cooperation between volunteers and local teachers, lead teachers and teaching assistants; 6) How to handle classes where students have varying academic levels and backgrounds. Each discussion group took notes and these will add to RCEF’s documentation of the SVP process and challenges.
