New Courses at Dadong Primary School

Teachers and RCEF teaching fellows at Dadong Primary School worked to develop two new courses for 5th and 6th graders. The course on thunderstorm safety was suggested after a villager was killed by lightening last month. Teaching fellows Yu Zhihua and Xia Jing have taught lessons about thunderstorm and lightening safety and have also organized 5th graders to research indigenous knowledge on this topic. We’re still trying to verify the soundness of some of the findings. For example, many locals believe that places where there are a lot of ants are more prone to be struck by lightening. After educating themselves, the students are going to educate villagers about how to stay safe in thunderstorms. They are creating posters which mainly rely on picture images, so that they can be more easily understood by villagers who don’t read well.
