The SVP teams began their first full day of teaching today! They follow the same general schedule: two periods in the morning from 7-9 AM and then two periods in the afternoon from around 4-6 PM. The times were designed around rural schedules because most households eat breakfast around 9 and avoid going out in the hot midday and afternoon. In between, volunteers write teaching reflections, prepare for new lessons, and chat with rural teachers, families, and students to better understand their lives.

Sara and I visited all of the sites this afternoon to see how everything was going. We walked into Nanzheng Elementary School at the start of the late afternoon activities. They have two classes–a 大班 made of up sixth through ninth graders and a 小班 of first through fifth graders. In the older class, Yao Songqiao gave an introduction to…giving introductions! Students interviewed each other and the teachers and then had to introduce them in front of the class. They learned about how to give introductions and came up with different ways of asking questions. This exercise was preparation for the interviews they will conduct as part of a “Community Research” class later on.

At Wang Zhuang Elementary School, there are also two classes. The number of students is still quite manageable although too many first- and second-graders came today. One challenge we have in SVP every year is the wide range of ages in students who show up after hearing from word-of-mouth. Since we don’t have enough volunteers to manage so many age levels, the team decided not to accept students under third grade starting tomorrow. Local teachers from Guan Ai and Wang Zhuang are participating well and even preparing their own experimental lessons.

At Zhaizi Elementary School, the teaching itself has gotten off to a smooth start. The principal listened to Xu Pengzhu’s fifth grade class and was very impressed by her ability to help students brainstorm creatively and speak out. There were some questions about whether students from other schools could attend but we sorted those out and slightly changed the schedule. During the mid-morning and afternoon when RCEF volunteers are not teaching, the regular school teachers hold “review classes” with the students. RCEF has never worked in a school that was holding 补习班 as part of the day and it came as a surprise. But it may be an interesting way for RCEF volunteers and the school’s teachers to mutually observe each other’s styles and learn.

王庄小学也有两个班。虽然今天一、二年级的学生也来了，但学生人数还不至于太多。暑期支教项目每年带给我们一个挑战，那就是闻讯而来的学生在年龄上往往差别很大。由于我们没有足够的志愿者人手，暑期支教队决定从明天起不接受二年级以下的学生。关爱的当地老师也积极地参与，甚至也开始准备他们自己的试验课了。

在寨子小学，教学也开始得顺利。听了许鹏珠教的五年级课程，该校校长对许老师帮助学生拓展思路、积极发言印象极深。我们也解决了关于外校学生能否也来上课的问题，并为此略微调整了时间表。上午的后半段和下午，RCEF的志愿者们没有上课，当地老师就给学生上了“补习课”。RCEF从未在上“补习课”的学校工作过，大家对此都有点儿诧异。不过，可能这也让RCEF的义工们和当地老师们得以互相观摩学习。
