Off to the sites!
Today was supposed to be the day that the teams got an early start to their teaching sites. However, a steady downpour of rain got in the way and everyone ended up sticking around Guan Ai longer than expected. The roads to Nanzheng Elementary School and Wang Zhuang Elementary School were washed out and dirt paths were difficult to traverse by car or foot. The same road that the volunteers had taken yesterday to go to community investigation (see picture) was full of sinkholes of gluey mud.
So, after filling out an evaluation form on the training, volunteers hung out and organized their teaching supplies and personal items. Some time was spent watching a movie about a rural school in Guizhou. Finally, when the rain stopped, Principal Yang revved up his trusty minivan and sent team after team to their schools. Here’s a picture of Pengzhu Xu, a returning volunteer from 2007, with her new students at Zhaizi Elementary School. Formal classes begin tomorrow!
Subra Huang)
