The Guizhou Sunshine Volunteers making a fireRCEF

Rural Education Innovation Grants: News from the Guizhou Sunshine volunteers

RCEF’s Innovation Grants Program provides grants for NGO and citizen-led rural education programs. Below are the experiences of one of our partners, the “Guizhou Sunshine volunteer home” which works with Miao and Buyi peoples.

During the course of the program, there were many touching stories which will stay with us for a long time. Several of these came up at the final evaluation meeting and grasped everyone’s attention:

1. In the “Path of Life” section, one student became upset and cried because he had misunderstood the rules. Afterwards, with a volunteer’s help, he managed to recognize his mistake and in the end got the top grade for the whole activity. When we had finished our meeting that evening, he brought over a group of children each carrying an orange lamp, then very respectfully gave one to each of us. We asked him why he had cried earlier on, and he answered: “Today’s activity really taught me the importance of communication.”

2. When the group’s finances came into severe difficulties, every member gave the money they had saved to travel home for Chinese New Year. At that time, the electricity was out too so there was no way to contact people in the outside world. Everyone really had to “tong zhou gong ji“, tide the storm together.

3. One evening there was some conflict among the group’s members. Once the work meeting was over, the meeting’s chair made every person say what was on their mind. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room. None of us will forget the sincerity of that occasion.

4. This year the program came up against some terrible freezing weather: on the way back, the mountain road was very slippery and it rained and snowed constantly. When the group ran out of supplies and had to make the decision to turn back, the situation looked pretty dire. But for the six hours plus that we were trekking, everyone supported and helped each other. When everyone was cold and hungry, the group’s male students made sure the girls didn’t freeze by digging firewood out of the snow and keeping us all warm while we took a break. The tears of the students who saw us off; the little fires by the roadside; the muddy paths that we slipped on countless times; the joy at seeing the life-saving bus; finally losing the discussion over the ticket-price and the bumps which frightened everyone out of their wits… all these experiences and more will remain with each of us for the rest of our lives.
