The Small Things in Life

Yesterday, while I was sitting at home in Amsterdam, working on our RCEF online Photo Gallery, I received an email from Lihua. She lives in China and was one of my fellow team mates of the Summer Volunteering Program 2007; we both were in the Zhonggu Village (Shandong province) team. We still contact each other once a while, but yesterday she emailed with a specific purpose…

In her email, Lihua said that Wang Mingqi, one of the students who participated in our summer camps of both 2006 and 2007, sent her a text message by using his father’s mobile phone. In that message, Wang Mingqi said he wanted for Giovanna to call him. Giovanna was one of our volunteer teachers of 2006, who lives in Amsterdam as well. I know that Wang Mingqi was one of Giovanna’s favorite students and that they have stayed in touch by writing letters and calling each other since summer 2006. I also know that Giovanna has been very busy lately so she didn’t contact little Mingqi for some while (she told me last week).

When I saw Li Hua’s email, I thought it was so sweet that I called Giovanna, who was at work, right away. She was so touched by the message that she couldn’t hide her emotions while she was at work…..

  1. Wonderful story! I am really glad that both of you have stayed in touch with the village children after the Volunteer Program. We should all do our best to support them as much as we can.
