A letter from a Guan Ai student to her pen pal

Letter WritingFifth-graders at Guan Ai school in Shanxi, one of the Teaching Fellows sites, correspond in English with pen pals at a school in California, also fifth-graders. Here is a letter one of the students recently wrote.

December 4, 2007

Dear Gabby,

How are you? This is my first time writing to you! Ever since our teacher told us about this project, we were all so moved. I thought of some questions I want to ask you. The first one is: Who is your President? What do you most want to become?

I will also answer those questions. Our Chairman is Mao Zedong. I want to become a teacher. I most like to eat rice, hot pot, and spicy things. As long as they are delicious, I like to eat them. I have a nickname for myself: “Tan Chi” (This means someone who can’t get enough of food!). The thing I like to do most is roller skate. I also like to fish. But I have to tell you something. You must have patience in order to fish. If you’re not patient, you will never catch one fish.

I don’t like to write in notebooks. I like to write on the blackboard. How I wish that I had my own little piece of blackboard!

Ok, that’s all about me. Will you really come here next year? I’m waiting for you.

Wishing you health and that you do well in your studies! Hope that you are happy every day!

Ping Liang
