Pictures for their Pen Pals
Fifth grade students in one of our TF program sites – Guan Ai Primary School, in Yongji, Shanxi – drew pictures for their American pen pals. Here’s a picture of one of their colorful and humorous creations. Each students has a Personal English Dictionary to learn English words and sentences that will be used in their own letters. Students really want to communicate with their American friends. They are eager to know what they eat, what they do in their spare time and what their money looks like! Both sides have already given each others gifts and letters, and their drawings are attached to their letters. Because the fifth grade is the only class participating in this pilot phase, they put together group presentations to the other grades to introduce the pen pal program and things they’ve learned about Americans. One of the biggest topics was Halloween because their pen pals sent them pictures and costumes of this holiday. The day after, every student was repeating one sentence in English: “Trick or Treat”!!
