Jikky Lam’s evaluation report from Henan site

Jikky LamIn November, RCEF Intern and VP07 volunteer Jikky Lam went to Dayang Village, Henan Province (河南大杨村) to investigate the impact of the Volunteer Program 2007 on the children. She used a variety of qualitative and quantitative evaluation methods. Here is what she wrote during her stay:

“Until now I’ve been doing written questionnaires with three grades (5th, 6th and 7th) and I have one grade to go (4th). I attended some classes in the higher grades and interviewed several students about their Volunteer Program experience. Most of the students liked Health and Community Research best. They like Health because it taught them knowledge about how to stay healthy, how to prevent sickness, the germs on your hands when you don’t wash them regularly, and what your lungs will look like when you smoke. Some of the things they already knew, for example that smoking is bad for your health, but they didn’t know why, what it does to your body. Now they know that “smoking makes your lungs bigger” and that “it kills the cells in your body”. They especially remember the pictures that were shown to them. Students hope that they will learn more about Health in the future because they think it is important but they don’t learn it at school. Many children liked Community Research because they could go outside and interview people at the local market. When I asked students in the questionnaire what they thought their biggest progress was, many wrote that they had more courage to speak up now, to raise their hands during class, or to talk to strangers. Attached you find an essay by a female student who is in the 6th grade now at Dayang primary school. This essay was homework for Chinese class (in her regular school, not the Volunteer Program), the topic was to write an essay about ‘ 暑假里的一件事‘. Please see below what she wrote…
Thumbs up for the volunteers!

Greetings from Henan,
Jikky

Here is the essay by the student:

  1. Thanks Jikky for the great feedback! And a big thanks to the wonderful Henan Team who made the teaching experience at Dayang possible: Jo Wan (little ray of sunshine), Dingding (great voice teacher whose skills were lost on me), Wang Yang (the coolest), Suqin Yang (the philosopher, mathematician and everything brainy), Mingming Zhou (the vigilant observer and teacher) and all the Dayang teachers, students and community members who welcomed us!
